Flutist Resources

  • A beginner always needs a quality, readable fingering chart! Here is a fingering chart that provides each of the 3 options for B-flat, as well as the three right-hand pinky options for high C. Ideally, we should all be fluent with each option, as they’re all appropriate in various circumstances.

See the categories below for guidance on refining tone and playing with more accurate intonation.

As a beginner, one of the most important things you can do to set yourself up for success is to work with an instructor. You’ll have a better experience if your instructor is someone you can work with comfortably and who is within your budget. If you’d like to schedule a virtual or in-person lesson, click here to contact me. If you decide I am not the right fit for you, I can provide you with suggestions and make sure you get reliable recommendations.

  • Flute tone can be frustrating, especially when we aren’t sure how to adjust based on the timbres we want. I created this graphic to illustrate how I approach tone using air speed/temperature with aperture width and shape, and am happy to answer any questions you might have.

I created this Strategies for Tone and Intonation book to walk a flutist or instructor through some methods for exploring how to manipulate their sounds for refinement and tuning.

This Flute Tone Triangle graphic, showing embouchure, air, and compression differences between octaves, is what I use with my students.

  • Manipulating intonation is rooted in a few basic concepts, based upon how the flute produces sound. In this presentation, I’ve outlined four ways flutists can change their pitch. These should be practiced one at a time and then used in combination to personalize what works best for each individual.

This Tuning Tendencies Chart can be used with individuals and as a sectional project.

This Intonation Prescription Template is excerpted from my Strategies for Tone and Intonation book, isolating one of the exercises for refining intonation.

  • Some of the most rewarding challenges advanced flutists can take on include learning new techniques. This presentation outlines common notation for various techniques, helping us all identify and demystify new sounds on our instruments.

  • Our stress (and subsequent nerves) can get in the way of not only our productivity, but also our ability to follow through on achieving goals we’ve set for ourselves. Reconnecting with the present moment through mindfulness helps, as does differentiating between overwhelm and burnout. If you have questions about stress, anxiety, fears, overwhelm, or burnout, please feel free to reach out!

Here is an infographic on Relaxing at the Stand. It was created in this layout so it does not take too much room on the stand and can serve as a reminder in any situation.

I have also compiled this booklet on Anxiety, Nerves, & Stress.
